Buildings

Buildings create the spaces we spend most of our time in, and I love painting buildings. The first painting I ever sold, at the age of eighteen, was of a pub near my home. I took my Mini Clubman, loaded with watercolours, and painted the pub, came home, cut a mount, made a frame, bought some glass, and when the pub opened at six o'clock I went in, showed it to the owner, and the deal was done.

I'm not quite so brazen these days.  But I still like the immediacy of drawing and painting buildings quickly. I love perspective, and colour, and the way light reflects between buildings, as well as picking out architectural details and occasionally planting people in the picture.

Some of these paintings were done in situ very quickly, some laboured over, but I am pleased with them all.
